Diet has a tremendous effect on health. Diet plays a role in
promoting health and reducing chronic disease for many
conditions such as preventing obesity, diabetes mellitus,
coronary heart disease. The food you eat is crucial to virtually
every bodily process and function. It paves the way for you to
have a healthy baby, helps to prevent or promote disease, may
sharpen or weaken mental ability, and may even affect your
mood. Eating a variety of foods is key to maintaining good
health because no single food or food group can supply all
the nutrients in the amounts your body needs.

A diet which covers the essential elements required by our body is a balanced diet
A balanced diet can be defined as one, which contains the various groups of food stuffs
such as energy yielding foods (carbohydrates, fats), body-building foods (protein,
minerals), and protective foods (vitamins) in correct propositions. So that an individual is
assured of obtaining the minimum requirements of all the nutrients. The components of
a balanced diet will differ according to age, sex, physical activity, economic status,
occupation and the physiological state like pregnancy, lactation etc.

Weight Management & Diet:
A combination of over eating and a lack of exercise normally
cause obesity. Obesity can have devastating consequences for
health and happiness and an emotional level can lead to a lack
of self-esteem and depression. If you eat more calories than
you burn off during normal daily activity the surplus calories are
stored as fat.

There is no magic cure for obesity. But you can achieve a lower
healthier weight by increasing your level of physical activity and
reducing your calories intake.

This can be achieved by combining a low fat diet with some form of regular physical activity.
An ideal slimming diet must provide all of the nutrients that the body needs. As these
nutrients have to come from a lower calorie intake, it is important to cut down on
confectionery cakes, biscuits, sweets and alcoholic drinks that are relatively high in
calories, but low in nutrients. The healthy slimming diet should be based on lower calorie
nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meat, poultry, fish, low fat dairy products,
cereals, salads, and pulses. Fresh fruit makes a good choice for a low calorie dessert.

Fat is the most concentrated source of energy (9 calories / gm). There is a misconception
that starchy staple foods such as bread, rice are fattening. Starchy foods help to satisfy the
appetite because they are filling rather than fattening. Whole grain foods such as whole
meal chapatti and brown rice are preferable to refined foods as they provide significantly
more vitamins, minerals and fiber.

To maintain good health and to function efficiently our bodies needs proteins,
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Our body also needs plenty of water. We must
drink 1.5 - 2 litres of fluid daily to maintain healthy kidneys and prevent urinary infection. The
body needs extra fluid when energy expenditure is high and also in hot weather. Water is
required in large amounts to regulate body processes such as digestion, excretion, and
maintenance of the body temperature and the electrolyte balance.

Some interesting and useful tips:

" Many people skip meals in order to lose weight, but the fact is otherwise. When you
skip meals during the day, your metabolism slows down. Weight loss through the
burning of stored fat is all about eating enough of the right kinds of foods so you stay
full and your metabolism stays as high as possible. Remember, if you feel hungry, your
metabolism slows down. You must stay full with healthy, non fattening foods and your
metabolism will continue to burn your stored fat as fast as your body will allow.

" Another interesting way that some people adopt to lose weight is to drink a large glass
of ice water just before meals. The cold causes your stomach to shrink slightly which
will make you feel full faster. This may be a useful tipd while you plan your diet.

" It is believed that hot and spicy foods such as hot peppers of all varieties and mustards
increase one's metabolism by as much as 40%. Research also shows that these foods
increase metabolism. This is a great way of adding spicing up the food and boosting
one's metabolism as well!

" Our stomach, mouth and brain are connected and it takes 20 minutes of chewing
before our stomach signals our brain that we are full. This means that one should
stretch our meals to, at least, 20 minutes or longer. Thus to lose weight one must
chew well and eat slowly.

" Did you know that you burn more stored fat when you exercise late in the day rather
than rather than in the morning? The best time to exercise to lose weight is in the late
afternoon/early evening before dinner. Doing this will not only burn off stored fat but
increase your metabolism for about two to three more hours just when it was starting
to slow down. This produces a significant increase in fat burned off, even after the
exercise is over. Second best time to exercise is in the morning before breakfast.

" Simply forget about being afraid of food. Food is wonderfuland in fact the best way to
lose weight is to make friends with food. Losing weight does not have much to do with
eating only small helpings. The best way to lose weight is to pile your plate, but with the
healthiest foods. An interesting approach to a healthy and a happy lifestyle!
